Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited aka BSNL Pune will launch the Fiber To The Home (FTTH) network in Pune city. BSNL’s VK Mahendra, Principal General Manager announced the launch of this high speed Internet service on Saturday at a press conference at BSNL service center. The FTTH networks is capable of delivering speeds up to 100 Mbps as it’s equipped with the GPON aka Gigabit capable Optical Network. The service is clearly targeted at high value customers who can afford to pay for the service. Setting up this service required BSNL to put up multi story buildings and advanced infrastructure. The service uses fiber networks instead of traditional copper wires. This change in setup requires special maintenance and and infrastructure to support it. Monthly charges for the GPON FTTH service range from ~Rs. 3k to about Rs. 84k, depending upon needs and usage. The network offers very high downloading and uploading speeds.
The trial of the service has been carried out at ICC trade towers and BSNL aims to capture about 1000 customers in the next three months. While the broadband penetration all over India is still in its nascent stage, BSNL Pune has taken a giant leap. While, the rest of us struggle with our 512 kbps pathetic connections that disconnect frequently, we wonder how Pune GPON customers are planning to use 100 Mbps network. We look forward to comments from our Pune readers. Go ahead. Make us jealous!
